Meet Matthew – a postgraduate Technology student at CCT College Dublin.
Matthew offers firsthand advice for new and prospective students on embracing autism and deciding when to disclose.
“It’s one conversation for so much more help in the future.”
Hi, I’m Matthew and just to share my personal experience.
I was diagnosed with high functioning autism (previously know as Aspergers Syndrome) or ASD when I was 13 years old – over 20 years ago.
The one lesson I didn’t learn until I was older and more mature – even into my late 20s – was not sharing my diagnosis with employers and colleges.
I know it seems potentially awkward or embarrassing to talk about it – this invisible diagnosis – but I learned to embrace it and share my story.
It is always so much better to talk about it and let people know, especially when I can get support from an EDI office or manager.
I can be different than other students and require more attention, or just need special assistance that others wouldn’t, and it’s always easier to ask when people are aware.
People are always more invested in helping when you ask for help.
This world can always seem overwhelming from the professional, social or personal struggles I have.
It’s always been great having someone in your corner.
I have Anne in CCT and it’s fabulous to have someone I can speak to openly, that can understand and advise or walk me through anything that is overwhelming me.
I suggest everyone do the same – it’s one conversation for so much more help in the future.
About Matthew
Matthew created this meme ‘My Brain while Sleeping’ which he entered into the #Divergentminds Art Project as part of the 2026 Autism Acceptance Festival.
Sometimes a picture really is worth a 1,000 words.
